Bangladeshi Foreign Minister: What is happening in Burma is ethnic cleansing

The Bangladeshi Foreign Minister on Sunday described what is being done in Burma towards the Rohingya as an ethnic cleansing.

“The international community says it is ethnic cleansing, and we are also seeing it,” said Abulhasan Mahmood Ali, the Bangladeshi foreign minister, where 300,000 Rohingyas have sought refuge.

The Rohingya minority holds the Burmese army and radical Buddhists in the country responsible for the violence.

The Burmese government has accused the Rohingya rebels of committing atrocities, including the burning of their villages, which the UN suspects.

Some 300,000 Rohingya Muslims from Rakhine state have fled violence to neighboring poor Bangladesh, according to the United Nations.

Sunday, the Rohingya rebels declared a unilateral ceasefire to observe the harsh humanitarian conditions experienced by the population and to facilitate the arrival of aid.
