Mauritanian president calls for referendum on constitutional amendments

Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz has called for a popular referendum on the constitutional amendments and the Mauritanian president confirmed at a news conference at the presidential palace in Nouakchott that he will resort to Article 38 of the constitution, which gives him a popular referendum to pass constitutional amendments.

The president rejected that the rejection of the constitutional amendments in the second chamber of parliament is healthy or democratic, stressing that it is unreasonable to block the thirty-three parliamentarians who rejected the amendments in the Council program of the majority of the Mauritanian people
