“US State Department” confirms North Korea detains U.S. citizen

The State Department confirmed Sunday evening that there had been reports that North Korea had arrested a US citizen of Korean descent.

“We are aware of the detention of the American citizen and confirm that the protection of American citizens is the most important priority for us, and we are working on this issue through the Swedish Embassy,” CNN quoted a US State Department official as saying, without giving further details.

The North Korean authorities arrested the American citizen, who did not reveal his identity, while trying to leave the country, the US network said, adding that Pyongyang is currently holding 3 US citizens
