Saakashvili served as president of Georgia in the presidential periods between 2004 and 2013 and left the country two days before his term of office ended and moved to the United States and granted Ukrainian citizenship in 2015, which led to the overthrow of his Georgian citizenship.
In 2014, the Georgian authorities accused the former president of involvement in a massacre against demonstrators, illegal seizure of businessman’s property, Badri Battarkatsishvili, and was charged with bank murder and embezzlement of state assets.
Saakashvili’s citizenship was Ukrainian citizenship on July 26, due to the filing of false papers for Ukrainian citizenship, after the Georgian side submitted documents proving the authenticity of the allegations.
Sergei Petokhov, Deputy Minister of Justice of Ukraine, said the Ukrainian authorities “received a request from the Georgian Attorney General’s Office to search, arrest and extradite the former president,” in accordance with Ukrainian criminal procedure legislation.
Petokhov also said that the Georgian Attorney General’s Office “provided assurances that the request was not based on political persecution, and that the person concerned would not be charged with crimes not mentioned in the extradition request.”
Saakashvili was filled with Ukrainian politics and won the post of governor of Odessa Ukrainian region from 30 May 2015, to 9 November 2016.
On July 26, 2017, the Ukrainian president, Piotr Boroshenko, stripped him of Ukrainian citizenship. Saakashvili then traveled to the United States, then moved to Poland, Lithuania and Hungary.
On August 26, Saakashvili said the Ukrainian and Georgian authorities were conspiring to prepare a coup in Georgia, which made him flee the country.
