Putin and Merkel condemn Pyongyang’s disregard for UN resolutions

Russian President Vladimir Putin and German Chancellor Angela Merkel discussed the situation on the Korean Peninsula on Monday and strongly condemned Pyongyang’s disregard for UN Security Council resolutions.

“It has been stressed that such steps are contrary to the principles of international non-proliferation and pose a serious threat to peace and security in the region,” the Kremlin said in a statement after a telephone conversation between the two leaders.

The Kremlin said Putin and Merkel stressed that “this serious crisis can only be resolved through political and diplomatic means through the resumption of negotiations between all parties concerned,” adding that they agreed to continue contacts on the crisis through their respective foreign ministers.
