Russian Foreign Ministry calls for direct dialogue between Kabul and the Taliban

The Russian Foreign Ministry on Monday stressed the need to launch a direct dialogue between the Afghan government and the Taliban as soon as possible after a Taliban attack on an Afghan military base in Mazar-e-Sharif.

Russia is ready to contribute to advancing the process of national reconciliation in Afghanistan through the Moscow platform, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

“The internal bloody conflict in Afghanistan does not rest, despite the long presence of NATO forces, and the influx of huge funds from foreign donors aimed at strengthening the capacity of the security sector in this country,” the foreign ministry said.

The militants of the “Taliban” attacked the base “Shaheen” military near the city of Mazar-e Sharif, Balkh province in northern Afghanistan on 21 April, killing 200 people killed and wounded, most of them Afghan soldiers
