South Korea said on Monday it would temporarily deploy four remaining missile launchers from the US missile defense system, Thad, after completing an environmental assessment by the government.
Some construction work will be carried out to deploy the four launch pads at the Seongju site in south Seoul, the Ministry of Defense said in a statement. There are currently two launch platforms on the site, which was a golf course.
The ministry did not specify the date for the launch of the launch pads and President Moon Jie-n took the decision to deploy the launch pads in the face of the growing tension sparked by North Korea, which conducted the sixth and most powerful nuclear test ever on Sunday.
China strongly opposes the Thad regime and says it undermines its security because of its powerful radar.
